"I would advise you, young man, to take care around anyone with the surname Firefax. I know not if the rumors be true that they be king killers, but they are, without any doubt, a dangerous family."
Legend tells of a city of gold on a phantom island. The wealth of that city could end the American Revolution. But the only person who knows the island’s location is the world’s deadliest assassin. And he’s not giving up that secret without a fight . . .
The world’s oldest family of high-profile assassins, the Firefaxes, have been killing off dignitaries—and being well-compensated to do so—for centuries. The family is thrown into turmoil by their patriarch’s death and the return of their cunning, cruel prodigal, Murdoch. With their father dead, Murdoch is the only one who knows where the Firefax wealth is, kept on a secret island. But two competing intelligence networks in the American Revolution are bent on tracking down the legendary treasure to end the war, whatever the cost. However, these spy networks may have met their match in this wily, dysfunctional family of killers.
My thoughts on Firefax
I was given a free copy of Firefax by The Niche Reader, this wasn't a genre I would normally go for so I was a bit sceptical when it arrived.
Firefax is a dark fictional novel centred around the Firefax family, who it turns out are natural born assassins. Each brother and sister possesses the skills to kill however as time has gone by, the desire to fulfil the family business needs has dwindled. When Murdoch Firefax returns to the family home, it can only mean danger for the rest of the firefax family who have remained living there.
What follows are family secrets, a story of pirates, and the desire to unravel a long known tale of an island covered in treasure, Lubrerum.
I thoroughly enjoyed all of the characters in the book, but mostly Cara, the Firefax sister. Her bold and brazen attempt at life whilst not truly accepting her destiny as a killer. Fearing she will turn out like her brother Murdoch or Louis, her first kill is to protect those around her.
When her brother Louis is poisoned by a man who wants access to the family's treasure, there only hope is for Murdoch to take them there. Louis' only chance of survival lies within a remedy which is located on the island of Lubrerum.
With family secrets, lies and myths unfolding, the story takes lots of turns. It is very gripping and I enjoyed every page, I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy and historical fiction.
