Once I had four brothers. Three of them are dead. I am next.

Felix Ashe is sure of only one thing. In thirty days, on his eighteenth birthday, he will die. He might be the only one convinced of this, but the gruesome deaths of his three brothers before him seem to point to only one thing: a curse, one doomed to stop anyone inheriting his family's incredible fortune.

Felix doesn't care about money, or himself, particularly. It's hard to have a stake in the future when you know you haven't got one. But he does care about his little brother Nick, very much. And when an opportunity to break the curse appears to present itself, it's impossible not to heed its dark call.

Soon long-buried secrets will take Felix to the darkest underbelly of Jazz-Age New York, to the far-flung wilds of the Yorkshire moors and back again. And bound to everything is a deadly secret society who will either be Felix's downfall . . . or his one chance at redemption.

My thoughts on A Dark Inheritance

I received an advanced reader copy of A Dark Inheritance from the lovely people at Netgalley after submitting a request to read it. I have never read anything by H.F Askwith however was drawn by the cover and the blurb.

This was a different read for me, not something I would normally have picked. My recent stream of reading had centred around chick literature but this one took me on more of a fantasy/mystery fiction adventure. The story was slow to start however sticking with it, because I believe every story should be read until the last page regardless, I'm glad I did. The story really gets going and leads the reader on an adventure crossing the big pond to England. I had a little bit of excitement when the story included Nottinghamshire where I actually do live!.

Felix the main character is really well written into the story, its easy for the reader to picture him and make their own interpretation of what he might look like and how he might act. With only 30 days left to live, he remains conflicted throughout the story, not knowing weather his father was a good man or not. After his father is released from the army on medical grounds and joins with Professor Leery in England, Felix has no idea what his father is doing other than that he is in a sanitarium recovering from his injuries. However, when one afternoon his mother announces that his father is to return to the family home, Felix is a whirlwind of questions.

His questions however go unanswered on his fathers return, he is unable to speak. Shortly after he arrives, he dies in his home office after what appears to be an accident. Felix, quickly realises it was no accident, he knows all about the Dark magic that surrounds his family, he just doesn't know or understand where it came from or what it wants.

The sleuthing adventure begins and we meet two more characters, Lois and Voilet. What I loved most about this book was the adventure, it really keeps you wondering whats going to happen. The plot twist with Violet towards the end was fantastic, I decided when I started this review I wouldn't reveal the end, so you have to read it to find out.

This is a definite must read, and you will probably finish it in a few hours if not a couple of days. You will be desperate to know the outcome of Felix's search and weather or not he can survive longer than his pre determined 30 days.

Lovers of Magic and mystery, buy it now!
